I often wondered how the Metco program affected inner city students. Thank you Ron,
for sharing your experiences. I always felt that this program was an unfair one
to the Boston students. Just the early busride must have been a nightmare at times, but your positive, insightful thoughts on this program have enlightend me. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Dawn,
My own mentoring story was less a matter of being given a leg up when I was down, as much as being given even better tools with which to proceed on a journey I had already begun. As a graduate student in Art History preparing for a career as an art critic, working my way through school, I won an internship documenting the art collection of a Boston financial consultancy. Little did I know that Stephen Paine, the curator of the collection and partner at the firm of Wellington Management, would foster in me a passion for the power of art in the work place. Buying trips to New York, trips back in time researching the acquisition and history of the collection, and most of all seeing Stephen's dedication to the power of art taken out of the museum and into the lives of his co-workers all conspired me to make me take a 180 degree turn, moving instead toward becoming a corporate fine arts consultant. Thirty years later, I have a thriving business and a passion for what I do. I serve as a well credentialed match maker, helping people find the perfect art for their homes or places of work. While Stephen Paine passed away in 1997, his memory lives on, and his dedication to scholarship and mentoring is celebrated every year when the Art Dealers Association of Boston grants it's annual Paine Scholarships to young artists concluding their undergraduate studies in studio art. The 12th Annual scholarship celebration takes March 1, 2012, at the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University.

As a Real World Learning Manager at the Met Center in Providence and a Performing Arts Educator, I see how important it is for young people to have, not only a mentor, but the opportunity to hear that mentor's story. There is so much assumption on how people get to where they are (even mentors take their own stories for granted). What's important is that children hear how life unfolds and that the path doesn't always have to be straight and narrow. Mentoring evolves into a gift to both parties!

we never know the lives we touch. We all have wonderful
God given talents that are recognized by others. The same
encounters could fall on barren ground, but with some
those talents we share take root.
